Quartet San Francisco is a string quartet who really knows how to do the crossover thing right. This piece is a mambo that QSF violinist Jeremy Cohen wrote in honor of Anne Crowden, a teacher from his youth.

Casey Driessen's new album, Oog, is so packed full of good music that I couldn't pick just one track to share, I had to include two in the show. Don't worry, I'm not really cheating, "Conversation with Death" flows right into "The Day Before Halloween," so they seem like only one song. ;)

With all the different instruments and electronic sounds on Oog, these tracks are much more than just another couple of fiddle tunes. By the way, here's a link to his mandotar instrument that I mention in my show commentary.

David Wilson’s Nobody Does it Better is a collection of familiar ballads from the 1960’s and 70’s. This song, “Make it With You,” is a 1970 #1 hit written by the band Bread.

Joan Jeanrenaud made her album Strange Toys with producer Pc Muñoz, whom we can thank for the great beats on "Kaleidoscope." This is by far my favorite track from the album, undoubtetly because it's just so damn cool.

Hey all - sort of a trippy show this time around,

Anna Schaad is an electric violinist based in the Seattle area. She has a sort of goth sensibility to her work. She has a new disc out entitled Dream Within a Dream (named after an Edgar Allen Poe poem). This cut is the final tune on that disc.

DSharp is is back for his third appearance on this proram, this time featuring a cut from his new disc, Civilized Savage. This tune is a take on the GS Boyz tune, "Stanky Legg."

John Ettinger is for me a fairly recent discovery, his disc Kissinger In Spacehas gotten a lot of mileage in my car over the past year. This tune is from his new, more experimental disc, Inquatica.

Rounding off the show is an excerpt from an improvisation entitled 34'18" featuring the work of Portugese violinist Ernesto Rodrigues and his son Guilherme Rodrigues. Recorded in Lisbon in December of 2008 and released under the name Twf Neus Ciglau, this piece is very experimental and a fairly challenging listen. That said, I hope you like it as much as I do!

It feels good to be back. We've got a more efficient website, an incredible crew, and some great music.

Starting off the show is Dublin-based fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. With one foot in the Irish tradition and the rest of him wildly creative and innovative, he creates a thoroughly enjoyable sound. This cut is from his latest release, where the one-eyed man is king (note the au courant lower case letters). And I hope I pronounced his name something close to correctly.

Trepanning Trio is a group from my backyard, based for the most part in Cleveland. This group is the brainchild of David Mansbach, a local leader in avant garde music in northeast Ohio. Mansbach has invited fourteen musicians from all over the United States (and Ireland) to record using only classical, traditional and handmade instruments. And one of these musicians is my friend and longtime collaborator, David Badagnani. David appears on this tune playing accordion, oboe, english horn, fiddle and bass viola da gamba. David has also been a longtime fan of this show and has helped me connect with many of the stellar performers that have appeared on it. Considering his support of the program and his virtuosity on virtually every instrument imaginable, it is my pleasure to include his recorded work on this episode. This cut is the lead track from Trepanning Trio's latest recording, The Man Killed the Bird.

Elias Kahila is a cellist based in Jyväskylä, Finland. A relentless innovative performer, his work is all over the internet (check out his YouTube channel). This tune is the title track from his latest release, Break Point. He is able to emulate a credible rock attitude more than most in the rock cello idiom.

Closing out the show is New York's Claremont Trio. With twin sisters Emily (violin) and Julia (cello) Bruskin, augmented with pianist Donna Kwang, the Claremonts are devoted to performing the work of contemporary composers in the piano trio idiom. This piece is by composer Paul Schoenfield, a composer whose work combines exuberance and seriousness, familiarity and originality, lightness and depth. This is from their 2008 recording, American Trios. Enjoy!

Vaughan Jones wrote: "Alessandro Rolla was born in Pavia on April 6th, 1757 – he soon revealed himself as an accomplished violinist and viola player and had a successful orchestral career as the principle Violist and then leader of the orchestra in Parma. In 1803, he was appointed conductor of the La Scala orchestra in Milan where he premiered works by Rossini and many other composers. Rolla wrote well over 70 works for the ‘Violin / Viola Duo’ combination – believing that both instruments should be treated as equals and that if the musical ideas in a composition were strong enough, a work could be reduced to just two instruments without any loss of impact. The piece on this disc (his Duo in C minor) – is quite an early work and allows both instruments bursts of intricate passagework.

Hello, This is my first time hosting Bowed Radio and I am very happy to release this episode to everyone. It has four tunes from great artists whose music I hope others will like as much as I do.

Alex Mitchell is a champion of the loop and delay pedals which this track, "VioTechno," displays quite well. He performs all his compositions solo, using these effects pedals to accompany himself. This is his second time on Bowed Radio, the first time being episode 54 with his piece "Living History." "VioTechno" comes from his 2008 EP, Intercosm. www.alexmitchell.org.

The California-based band Off the Deep End is a four-piece group with a drummer, guitarist/vocalist, bassist and extraordinary cellist Tina Guo. Guo is only 23 years old but has already amassed an impressive international concert schedule of classical music and a drool-worthy resume of non-classical projects, not the least of which (in my opinion) is starting Off the Deep End. Mads Tolling is an accomplished violinist and violist. He has played for bassist Stanley Clarke's touring band and the Turtle Island String Quartet since 2003. In 2007, he started his own group, the Mads Tolling Trio, and released their album Speed of Light in 2008. This track, "Danish Dessert," comes from a live performance where the trio is joined by a drummer, making them the Mads Tolling Quartet. www.madstolling.com

"Chance" was originally the last movement of a four-movement string quartet, however this movement was composed first. The revisions done in 2007 were executed to make this movement stand alone from the others. It was premiered in Jordan Hall by the Laurel String Quartet, a quartet of students at New England Conservatory, and was recently featured in the "Listen Local" series of the Providence String Quartet. The Violin Brothers, Debsankar and Jyotisankar Sankar, bring their English music education, as well as their learning from Indian masters such as Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan to create a violin-intense sound that merges many traditions from both North and Sount Indian music. It is a life-changing event watching this group play live. This is a live recording from the prestigious Dover Lane Music Festival.

Spare Rib and the Bluegrass Sauce is sort of a trippy neo-traditional bluegrass outfit from Seattle. High energy, dancy, and political, this group takes blugrass to a new level. This is their take on the popular Guns 'n Roses classic.

Garth Knox is an Irish born string player who explores possibilities of the viola d'amore. His breathtaking new album D'Amore features contemporary work for the instrument as well as compositions that date back to the Renaissance. This piece is Knox's own composition.

Jesus Florido makes his second appearance on this program. A player of considerable distinction, this Venezuela-born violinist is equally at home in a classical setting as he is in a Latin ort rock setting. His latest disc Heading North is a fantastic disc that (so I have discovered) holds up very well listen after listen. The guy's amazing.

Kari Tieger returns for a third time on this program with a cut from her most recent disc Nos Mots. This francophone Rhode Island pianist regularly features string players on her recordings and thus - by my reckoning - makes her an honorary fiddler herself.

Lyriel is a group from German hardcore group from Germany that features a full string section. Loud and highly dramatic, this group will leave you smoldering in your shoes. This tune is from their latest disc Autumntales - a recording they are offering for free download from their website. Check it out!

Closing out the show is composer/violinist Mary Lee Taylor. She has been featured previously on this program as a member of the Upton Trio. This tune was recorded live on May 8 of this year in Camden, South Carolina.

Hello everyone,

The Reese Project is a fascinating little jazz group based smack in the middle of Amish country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Prominently featured is cellist Laurie Reese, who does an awesome little musical dance with husband Tom Reese on flute. Hip, light, yet powerful - you can cut the sexual tension of their music with a knife.

Dr. Phillip Serna is a bassist with the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra in the Chicago area. He is also well versed in the instruments of the viola da gamba family. This piece is the first movement of Einojuhani Rautavaara's Angel of Dusk, concerto for double bass, two pianos, and percussion instruments.

David Wilson makes his second appearance on this program with a sweet little number called "The Crossing," - not yet released on any album.

Finishing out this show is Ashley Hicklin & The Troubadours, a group out of the UK that includes a full string quartet and other orchestral instruments. Romantic, lilting, much fun

Hello everyone,

Mary Lou Newmark is a poet and violinist from California. She recently debuted a full-scale theatrical production on the subject of homelessness called Street Angel Diaries. A companion CD was released in 2007 called Music From Street Angel Diaries -- and this is the lead track from that disc.

Beard returns for a second appearance on this program, having been featured on episode 020 and with violinist Bille Howard as the host of episode 021. They have a new EP out called Beautiful Interiors and this is the title track from that disc.

Cellist Joan Jeanrenaud is back as well. She is perhaps best known for her work as the longtime cellist with Kronos Quartet. She left Kronos in 1999 to venture into improvisation and composition, and in 2008 has released her second disc of original work entitled Strange Toys.

Closing the show is Shiki Group, an improvisational trio from Boston featuring Tsuyoshi Honjo on sax, Michael McNeill on piano, and Gabriel Solomon on violin. Strange and wonderful.
